Why Use the Word Atonement for a Believer When We are all already Blood Washed?

Q: We all Christians beleive that by Jesus's blood our sins have been washed out and not just ours only, but of all who have beleived in him and have accepted Him as his Saviour. If sins have already been washed out, then why we use the word Atonement? Because as I believe it's meaning are not matched with reality for a believer.

A: Atonement comes from the word 'atone' which means 'to bring two persons to again become one in friendship, where the offended one will let go of the offence of that offender so that it could all be forgiven and forgotten, and as a sign accept him unconditionally as a son.' God the Father was brought in to friendship with humanity through the blood of the Son of God Jesus Christ. We use the word 'atonement' to denote this frienship that was established with God the Father when we first believed Jesus and which also can be used to convey that God still continues his friendship with sinful mankind because of the sacrifice of JESUS. It does match with reality based on Christ's sacrifice.

Leviticus 16:30 For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.

Leviticus 16:34 And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year. And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.

As we have seen in the above verses, atonement was made for the Israelites once a year when the High Priest would take the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer in to the Holy of Holies, pouring it on the Mercy seat, and then sprinkling on the unclean vessels
(Heb 9:3-5; 7-8, 21), which sanctified and purified the flesh of all people who worshipped the God of Israel.

But now in the New Testament once and for all time atonement has been done.

"11 ...Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands [i.e. the Heavenly Tabernacle], that is, not of this creation. 12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. 13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, 14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance." (Hebrews 9:11-15).

"For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified." (Heb 10:14).

Praise God that we have been made friends with God though Jesus forever!
